Sarah Brightman’s Christmas Through the Years begins in Vienna, 1997

As part of Christmas in July, we’re looking back at some of the special festive shows and performances Sarah has shared with audiences around the world throughout her career.

Our first stop is A Gala Christmas in Vienna, recorded live at Vienna’s historic Rathaus on 21 December 1997 and later broadcast on television on Christmas Day.

This grand festive concert brought together Sarah Brightman, Plácido Domingo, Riccardo Cocciante and Helmut Lotti, with the Wiener Symphoniker conducted by Steven Mercurio and the Gumpoldskirchner Spatzen choir.

Featuring Christmas songs from around the world, the evening captured the elegance and tradition of the season in one of Europe’s great musical cities.

Across the evening, Sarah appeared on several pieces from the festive programme, including “The Closing of the Year”, “First of May”, “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and “Silent Night”, with the concert later released for fans to watch and enjoy at home.
