Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance was a combination of two separate works: Tell Me on a Sunday, a one-woman song cycle, and Variations, a work for solo cello (written for Julian Lloyd Webber) and rock band. Song and Dance opened on March 26, 1982 at the Palace Theatre in London with Marti Webb singing Tell Me on a Sunday. Song and Dance ran for 781 performances in London, closing on March 31, 1984. It was at the end of this run that RCA commissioned a performance starring Sarah Brightman to be recorded for release on double LP in the UK and on VHS in the US. Sarah’s performance was staged and recorded before a live audience at the Palace Theatre in London on April 28, 1984.
